Dr. Peka Edmonds Full Bio
Dr. Peka Edmonds is from Honolulu, Hawaii and for the past 20+ years has resided in Kalamazoo, Michigan.
Credentialed with a Doctorate in Physical Therapy from Boston University and a Master’s Degree in Physical Therapy from the University of North Dakota, Dr. Edmonds has served as a licensed Physical Therapist for over 20 years.
As the team setter and captain, Dr. Edmonds helped her team to five Collegiate National Volleyball Championships: Association for Intercollegiate Athletics for Women (AIAW) Championship, and the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) Championships for four consecutive seasons.
Dr. Edmonds was awarded National All-Tournament First Team and designated an All-American. She has been inducted into the University of Hawaii at Hilo Hall of Fame, both as a team member and as an individual contributor.
Dr. Edmonds has coached volleyball for more than 20 years indoor and beach volleyball, at all scholastic and professional levels in Hawaii and Michigan. She has trained and competed on the professional level and has learned to optimize athletic performances.
Dr. Edmonds is certified in Strength and Conditioning by the International Sports Science Association (ISSA) to support competitive athletics.
Individual athletic accomplishments:
Dr. Edmonds played professional 2-persons beach volleyball, where she has partnered closely with both a US Olympic player and former AVP Tour players. Dr. Edmonds has earned Midwest Pro Volleyball Association (MPVA) Rookie of the Year. She has also won the Jose Cuervo Beach Volleyball Championship (2 consecutive summers) and Emporio Armani Beach Volleyball Championship (2 consecutive summers). Dr. Edmonds is a High School Scholar Athlete and was named to the Hawaii State Volleyball Championships All Tourney Team.
Personal, coaching, and training philosophies; Dr. Edmonds understands that family and education remain top priority. While she coaches each player to have fun, she’s aware being a successful athlete requires discipline and leadership. There are no shortcuts to excellence. Discipline involves paying attention to detail and reinforcing fundamentals; leadership involves setting good and positive examples for others to follow.
Key characteristics Dr. Edmonds imparts to individuals are that,“with patience and persistence, she will help to nurture growth in each player and inspire commitment to teamwork. This team cohesion will, in turn, help achieve both team and individual goals. Having each player acknowledge that competition involves both success and failure will instill resilience in the team. How we deal with mistakes is what really counts—embracing the immediate present, continuing to learn and grow.”
